Our month-by-month forecast of where the wildebeest herds will be in 2027, and which camps to book for each stage.

Follow the rain

The migration follows the rain, and the rain does not keep a calendar. But the broad pattern is reliable enough to plan around a year ahead, and the best camps for each stage book up that early.
The short rains of late 2026 arrived on time, which bodes well for an early calving season on the southern plains around Ndutu in January and February 2027. Our guides expect the herds in the western corridor by late May and the first Mara River crossings in the first half of July.
For each stage we recommend a different base. Ndutu and the southern plains for the calving season, when predators are everywhere and the light is soft; the Grumeti and the western corridor for the first river crossings in June; Kogatende and the Mara Triangle from July to October. Book the northern camps first: the best of them are already filling for August 2027.

2027 at a glance

  • January–March: calving around Ndutu and the southern Serengeti
  • April–May: moving north through the central Serengeti
  • June: the Grumeti River and the western corridor
  • July–October: Mara River crossings, northern Serengeti and Maasai Mara
  • November–December: heading south again through Lobo and Seronera

Crossings are most frequent from late July to September.
