Ten thousand torii, moss gardens and a zen breakfast: how to see Kyoto's great temples before the tour buses arrive.

Start before the city wakes

Kyoto has more than a thousand temples, and the best of them are busiest between ten and four. Set an alarm: Fushimi Inari is open all night, and at seven the upper paths belong to the foxes.
This guide is ordered by opening time so you can string three great sites together before lunch.

We did Fushimi Inari at seven like the guide says and had the top of the mountain to ourselves.

Helpful and honest. I would love a section on travelling in the rainy season.
