Florence Beyond the Duomo
The Oltrarno, the hills and the city Florentines keep for themselves

Cross the Arno for artisans, gardens and the best view in the city, then come back for dinner near Sant'Ambrogio.
Cross the river
Most visitors spend their Florence days in the few streets between the Duomo, the Uffizi and the Accademia, and the city there can feel like a single crowded gallery. The cure is to walk across the Ponte Vecchio and keep going.
The Oltrarno, the far bank of the Arno, is where Florence still makes things. Workshops for gilding, bookbinding, shoes and picture frames line the streets around Santo Spirito, and the piazza in front of Brunelleschi's plain-fronted church is the neighbourhood's living room, with a morning market and terraces that fill at aperitivo time. Look for the small buchette del vino, the stone wine windows in palace walls through which wine was once sold.
From here the city climbs. The Bardini Garden has terraces of wisteria and the best quiet view of the Duomo, and higher still the Romanesque church of San Miniato al Monte looks down over the whole of Florence. Go at sunset, then walk down past the crowds on the Piazzale Michelangelo. For dinner, cross back over the river to the streets around the Sant'Ambrogio market, where Florentines eat.

Followed this almost to the letter over a long weekend and it was spot on. The early-morning tips alone saved us hours of queueing.

Third Demo guide I have used this year and they never miss. Realistic timings, great food and no tourist traps.
